Copenhagen, as every city, has some really cool things to offer.
Which “cool things” am I talking about? I’m gonna give you a few examples right
now.
For example, I’m talking about Food Sharing Copenhagen. As
the name suggests, the project aims at sharing food coming from markets or
supermarkets which otherwise would go wasted. A few people started with this
idea a couple of years ago or so, now there are usually more pick up days and pick
up places every week. The word spread out quickly in town, especially among
students, thanks also to the motto “sharing is caring”. However, the volunteers
are never enough and the work –collecting the food, transporting it, washing
and making a selection of it- is a lot!
I’m talking also about The Floating City, little crazy, hippy,
anarchic community. They are committed
to save objects that were thrown away but can still be used in many ways (with
some creativity and after a good cleaning). In the warehouse near the central
station where they are based there’s space for a laboratory of metal sculptures,
another space where to fix and create artistic bikes, a “corner of the free
things” and a stage for music and scene.
The Candy Factory (Bolsjefabrikken) is
a space that was created out of an old candy factory in Norrebro. Every wall is
marked with a graffiti while the air around is always filled by some slow beats
of the music. I admit I only went for parties there, however there’s also a
community kitchen going on once a week and a bike repair corner.
What I think that these 3 places share is their commitment to
the re-use of abandoned spaces and resources to share it with the community. You
probably won’t find about them in the Lonely Planet guides, but it’s great (and
very underground!) what they are doing, so that’s why they should be supported.
